The American Oligarchy Is HereNovember 24, 2025
Donald Trump hosted the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, last week, where he chastised a reporter in front of the man accused of ordering the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Following this despicable display, Trump hosted a state dinner for the Saudi prince where the CEOs of many tech and cryptocurrency companies were in attendance. This opulent display eerily resembled Trump's second inauguration, where many tech CEOs were also in attendance, with better seats than cabinet members and members of Congress. Additionally, these companies have made various donations to Trump's inauguration fund, his presidential library, and various White House modifications, including the garish ballroom for which the East Wing of the White House was demolished. This raises the obvious question: why are all the executives of these powerful and valuable tech companies playing nice with Donald Trump? The answer is simple. The executive branch is the only barrier between these companies and full control of our information, media, and data. They are making themselves an indispensable part of our future society, and winning over Trump is the way to do it. Let's be clear: it is Congress's role to be the bulwark between the people and an oligarchy of tech billionaires (soon to be trillionaires), but they've proven incapable of undertaking this role with no signs of that changing. If things continue down this path, we will begin to see mass layoffs as companies employ AI and automation, with no concern for the social safety net. We'll see data centers being built all around us with no limits or concerns for the environmental impact. We'll have biased AI systems declining healthcare coverage, and seniors, women, and minorities will be dealing with the brunt of it. These CEOs are not taking time out of their days because they believe Trump is a great hang. They're doing it because they're cementing their positions as the future gatekeepers of our society. We cannot allow this to happen. We need scientists and technologists in Congress to stand up to these tech oligarchs. We are running out of time!
