Your Electricity Bill is Going UpThe rise of data centers is placing huge demands on the power grid. As with any scarce resource, higher demand means higher prices, and we're starting to see the effects of an aging power grid that cannot keep up with increasing demand. Congress needs to double down on investments in renewable energy and home modernization, as well as research into energy storage and efficient data centers. Now more than ever we need to make huge advancements in these technologies, and that progress will come from universities and labs across the country. It's therefore the worst possible time for the Trump administration to announce a $100,000 fee for H1-B visas, which will reduce the flow of scientists and engineers into the country and threaten America's competitive edge. It would be one thing if this was announced alongside new investments into our ailing education system, but this is nothing more than the administration recognizing that it needs to generate revenue but doing everything to avoid taxing billionaires. At the end of the day, this is going to hit the pocketbook of every Philadelphian. Congress can do something about it. Now is the time to act! Hiding the Data Won't Change the FactsThe Trump administration is ending a decades-long food insecurity survey performed by the USDA, with the final report to be released in October using data from 2024. This is occurring at a time when food insecurity is on the rise across the country thanks to policies this administration has put in place that have caused higher prices in stores due to reduced production and tariffs on imports. Hiding the numbers that would show what a terrible job this administration is doing is a strategy we've seen numerous times, including their pressure to stop COVID testing in 2020. Instead of addressing concerns about cost of living, Trump has been picking fights with late-night TV hosts and trying to strip away the First Amendment rights of Americans. While hiding their failures is Trump's grand plan, Congress needs to focus on helping those Americans that are suffering. They should zealously protect their authority to levy tariffs by moving to remove those that this administration has put in place, relieving pricing pressures on everyday items that people depend on. They must also strengthen programs like SNAP and the Child Tax Credit, and support state and local initiatives to provide free school lunches. Let's not lose sight of what's important: helping to improve the lives of all Americans. |
