It May Be Worse Than We Think

It seems everyone except those in Congress realizes that losses in the job market caused by AI will be huge and far-reaching! Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO of Klarna Group PLC, believes that AI will be as good as or better than humans at customer-facing jobs. This is an opinion shared by many in industry, but Congress has yet to design comprehensive legislation to address it, choosing instead to drag its feet and throw random bills at the wall to see what sticks. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment, and Congress needs experts to lead. The longer we wait, the harder it will get, and the more people will be hurt.

City Hall and AI

Congress has a lot to do to make sure that Big Tech and AI doesn't run amok in society, but that's only part of the story. State and local governments must be transparent and accountable as they use AI in the operations of their departments and give these systems access to the data of citizens. On Wednesday I'll be in attendance at the City Council Hearing on AI in Philly, hosted by the People's Tech Project and Philly Tech Justice Collective, to have discussions on how the city is using technology and AI for surveillance, immigration enforcement, and other activities. It's the job of the people to hold our elected officals accountable.

No Kings This Weekend

I'll be in attendance at the No Kings protest this Saturday, October 18, at 12 PM at City Hall and at the later protest at Germantown Avenue and Cresheim Valley Drive at 4 PM. Come out and make your voice heard: those in power lead through the consent of the governed! I hope to see you at either or both!
